Sandwell Council to shine a light on the borough’s rich and diverse culture
Sandwell Council will shine a light on the borough’s rich and diverse culture in the build-up to and during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Its Shine a Light festival will showcase the best of Sandwell’s arts, sports and culture from all ages, backgrounds and parts of the community.
The programme includes a full schedule of events and activities taking place from May until September 2022. The events and activities will take place over six weekends, one in each of Sandwell’s six towns, ending with a two-week Shine a Light festival at Sandwell Valley from Monday 25 July to Monday 8 August.
The Shine a Light weekends will feature free children’s events, arts, sports, local culture and heritage. They will take place at town centres, heritage sites, public and open spaces from 10am – 4pm on weekends between May and July, starting in Oldbury on Saturday 14 May.
As part of the weekend celebrations in each town there will be a ticketed evening festival with fairs, live performances, fire performers and stilt walkers, food and drink, and entertainment for both children and adults.
The culmination of the programme will be the two-week festival of events and activities at Sandwell Valley from Monday 25 July until Monday 8 August. The festival will include an opening event with live performances on-stage.
There will also be daily entertainment and activities including live big screen action from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and a Commonwealth-themed food festival and market.
There will be further events and activities that engage local community groups and residents taking place throughout the festival.
