The Black Country Local Heritage List records and celebrates historic sites from across the region, helping to preserve our unique history for future generations, and inform planning decisions. It currently includes over a thousand entries, and wants your nominations for even more. 

Sandwell landmarks on the list include:

• Industrial heritage sites – such as Hadley Bridge in West Bromwich and the Wednesbury clock tower (pictured)
• Domestic buildings – such as Harborne Cottages in Smethwick
• Business premises – such as the Plough in Oldbury and Sandwell Snooker Centre in Bearwood.

The project is funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and local heritage consultancy TDR Heritage has been commissioned to run the project in the Black Country on behalf of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton local authorities. 

There are five types of heritage that can be included on the list:

• Buildings and structures
• Parks and gardens
• Archaeological sites
• Sites of geological interest
• Public art work

More detailed criteria for each type are available on the website, where you can also see a map of the sites already listed.

TDR is working with a range of local communities to encourage nominations, such as clubs and heritage societies, and are keen to hear from individuals as well. Nominations are open until Monday 14 February and can be made via the online form. If there’s a hidden gem or significant place that you feel is important to the cultural heritage of the borough, now’s the time to shout about it!
