The Office for National Statistics is considering developing a new service to help businesses report data relating to sustainable development, and is keen to get feedback on the plans.

In 2015, all member states of the United Nations – including the UK – agreed to work towards seventeen sustainable development goals. The aim is to end poverty, protect the planet and improve people’s lives. More detail can be found on the official website, but in brief the goals are:

• Good health and wellbeing
• Quality education
• Gender equality
• Clean water and sanitation
• Affordable and clean energy
• Decent work and economic growth
• Industry, innovation and infrastructure
• Reduced inequalities
• Sustainable cities and communities
• Responsible consumption and production
• Climate action
• Life below water
• Life on land
• Peace, justice and strong institutions
• Partnerships for the goals

The Office for National Statistics is responsible for collecting, monitoring and reporting data in the UK relating to the sustainable development goals. It is looking into developing a new service, which would help businesses set up a platform to record their data and provide training to ensure the accuracy of the information.

It is now appealing for as many people as possible to take part in a short survey to let them know the type of support businesses need and to help shape its proposals. The survey should take around ten minutes to complete, closes on Monday 21 February and is available on the ONS website.
