Black Country highways surfacing contract awarded to Colas
A three-year contract for carriageway surfacing across the Black Country has been awarded to three contractors, including Colas.
The contractors have been appointed to surface 3,650km of highways in Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton. The works will be 100 per cent delivered by local Colas teams.
Keeping roads safe and well maintained is crucial to the economy of the borough as they provide access to employment, health services, education and also bring important social benefits. Sandwell Council is committed to investing in the maintenance of the road infrastructure for the benefit of both residents and businesses.
Colas will bring global innovations to the region to deliver reduced carbon solutions and the new contract creates more opportunities to support local communities with employment.
The appointment helps Colas to continue its position as a key contractor in the West Midlands, having recently been appointed to the Black Country Minor Works framework and securing the National Highways Area 9 maintenance and response contract.
Colas already has strong local community links but this contract will see it create more opportunities for the long term unemployed as well as boosting opportunities for youth employment and disadvantaged communities. The team will continue to work with Dudley College as part of its apprenticeship offering.
The Midlands based team also supports Coventry City Council on the Civil Engineering and Traffic Safety framework and is delivering the A34 sprint scheme part 1 for Transport for West Midlands in Walsall, as well as the A46 Stoneleigh junction improvement scheme.
When completing the highways contract, Colas will transition to an electric or alternative fuel fleet in an effort to commit to decarbonisation. Working with each local authority, the Colas team will use low carbon solutions wherever possible.
