Sunroofs and supplier awards: meet #madeinsandwell Monday’s Star Precision Tools

This #madeinsandwell Monday we’re celebrating a manufacturer and supplier called Star Precision Tools Ltd (www.starprecisiontools.co.uk) – established in Sandwell for over 30 years.

WebastoFrom its production facility on Holyhead Road in Wednesbury, this family owned precision-engineering company manufactures metal stampings, welded assemblies, tooling and sheet metal pressings for clients in many industries, including agriculture, food processing and storage.

A big part of Star Precision Tools’ work is in the automotive industry. Among other accolades, the company is a primary manufacturer and component supplier of Webasto sunroof systems. You will find the result of some of Star’s high-profile supply contracts in Jaguar Land Rover’s Evoque and Discovery models.

Thanks to its excellent standards of service, Star Precision Tools is a past winner of Webasto’s ‘Best Supplier of the Year’ award.

Land Rover Evoque with Webasto in situAs well as Jaguar Land Rover, Star Precision Tools supplies precision components and pressings to other major automotive clients across the world. It has preferred supplier status with many major OEMs (original equipment manufacturers).

Like most successful businesses, Star Precision Tools is committed to investing in its future. To increase productivity and decrease lead times, for example, the company offers a 24/7 CNC (computer numerical control) turning service, having purchased two high-tech Mazak CNC quick-turn machining centres.

The company has worked closely with clients and the Black Country Growth Hub to obtain funding from the Green Shoots scheme, which supports advanced engineering in our region.

While Star Precision Tools’ expertise is sought after by international clients, the company’s focus when it comes to suppliers is to think local. That’s according to Jayne Bates, managing director:

“Our supply chain is predominantly Black Country based, so we support, sustain and provide jobs for local people whilst boosting the local economy,” said Jayne. “We buy materials, metal finishings, and powder coating from local suppliers within a five- to ten-mile radius”.

Jayne also told Think Sandwell about Star Precision Tools’ pride for its workforce.

“Customers rely on us to manufacture high-precision parts, tools and fixtures with a very quick turnaround, and they come back to us again and again because they know they’ll get a quality product and we won’t let them down.  The company has ISO:9001 accreditation and its workforce is supported to stay ahead of the ever-changing requirements of the automotive industry and trained to provide the highest quality standards.

“Our continuous business growth and people development strategy allows us to retain highly skilled people from the Black Country and attract new talent. Star Precision Tools is proud of its well-trained, skilled and proficient workforce.”
