Parcel giant DPD has recently agreed a deal to expand its existing depot in Oldbury. DPD already operates from a large warehouse in Parsonage Street and has recently agreed a lease on an adjacent 70,836 square feet unit.

DPD is a leading operator in the UK express parcels sector and offers a range of specialist solutions and services. It is a member of one of Europe’s leading parcels groups, DPDgroup, which is owned by France’s La Poste, the second largest postal group in Europe. DPDgroup is at number 48 in Sandwell’s Top 50 fastest growing companies for 2019.

DPD began life in the UK in 1970 as Courier Express, changing its name to Parceline in 1984 when it was acquired by Mayne Nickless of Australia. La Poste bought the company in 2000 and in 2008 Parceline became known as DPD.

The new unit in Oldbury sits on a 6.4-acre site accommodating HGV parking, which is essential for the time-critical parcel carrier and not easy to come by in the region.

The facility comprises six loading doors with eaves height of 8.5 metres, a 54,896 square feet warehouse, a 14,356 square feet loading tunnel with canopy plus 1,584 square feet of office space over two floors.

The Oldbury location suits DPD as it is situated just 1.5 miles from Junctions 1 and 2 of the M5 motorway and the easy access to the motorway network enables efficient country-wide distribution of parcels.

The company has its headquarters in Smethwick and 2,800 of its 11,000 UK staff are employed across the Sandwell borough. In total it operates 3,675 vehicles from 56 locations, servicing 6,500 customers.

DPD also has a sister company in the UK, called DPD Local, which is a franchised network that focuses on express parcel services for SMEs.
