Focusing on Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton while in the Black Country, the New Schools Challenge is visiting towns and cities across England where new schools could help address shortages in school places, improve educational standards or create greater choice for local parents. This could mean a new secondary school with a specialism in technology and engineering to give school leavers access to the growing number of jobs in this sector, or a primary school that concentrates on numeracy and literacy to provide pupils with the basic skills they need for life.
Despite many excellent schools in the area, there are also significant educational challenges in these towns. In Sandwell only one-third of students on free school meals go on to higher education compared to half of other students. The New Schools Network wants to encourage more groups to come forward to help improve education in the Black Country. We are especially interested in hearing from the business community about how well schools equip young people for the world of work, and what features you would like to see in schools in the area. To give us your views or find out more about getting actively involved in a project for a new school, join one of our open events at:
• West Bromwich Library from 10am onwards on Thursday 23rd January
• The New Art Gallery, Walsall from 10.30am onwards on Friday 24th January
Alternatively, give us your perspective on the discussion by filling in our online survey, or request an informal meeting with the team: challenge@newschoolsnetwork.org or 0845 875 0787.
Please note this has been shared as information only and as a council we do not endorse one company over another

We’ll kick off our 2014 Breakfast Clubs on Friday 24 January with a 'meet the buyer' special with major contractor Thomas Vale Construction.
The early morning meeting, taking place as usual in the chamber rooms of Sandwell Council House, will focus on the business opportunities being generated by Thomas Vale's regeneration projects in the region - and in particular the building of the new West Bromwich Building Society headquarters.
