    Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce

At the first event of 2016, we will be reviewing the latest results, considering business performance and confidence in the first quarter for local businesses. As part of the business report we will also be examining key business policy themes. In Q1 manufacturing is under the spotlight.  In 2011, George Osborne promised to rebalance the economy, yet 5 years later manufacturing output is no higher. Recent GDP figures and our own report in Q4 2015 demonstrate that while the service sector continues to grow, manufacturers in contrast are struggling.

Making Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) performance our priority

Are you achieving your growth aspirations?

Do you have the management and technical skills to make sure you grow?

If the answers to both of these questions is not an outright yes you may be extremely interested in this event.

We would like to invite you to attend a consultation on the SME skills and knowledge gap.

Birmingham City University and the Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences (BLSS) have invested heavily in a programme of activities that make sure the expertise within the university is working with you to improve your business performance.

As part of this ongoing investment we want to highlight to you what expertise is available through our graduate talent and consult you on what offerings you would like to see developed for the future.

In typical Birmingham City University style we are working with you to develop these activities rather than telling you what you require. So don’t miss this golden opportunity to discuss with us and your fellow businesses what your requirements are.

Annual spotlight on Wolverhampton, but this time in a different venue. The Grade 2 listed former Low Level Station, now Grand Station has been transformed from a derelict building into a fantastic conference/wedding/banqueting centre by two local businessmen. The attention to detail has revitalised the historic feel of the building, whilst providing a modern facility and is an ideal setting for our breakfast.

Tim Johnson from Wolverhampton City Council will give an update on projects from last year which are moving forward and a look forward to other opportunities. Mary Neale from local consultants Crestwood Environmental will explain about working with historic buildings and particularly the planning process.

Join a Business Breakfast Briefing, where the Chamber’s Alliance 4 the Black Country will present the results of the Chamber's Black Country Business Indicator and explain the implications for our local economy.

The survey is extremely well respected and influential and is used by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee and a number of government departments. By taking part it ensures that the issues that affect Black Country businesses specifically are heard at the highest level. The results are given coverage by local, national and international media.

The British Chambers of Commerce Quarterly Economic survey is designed to monitor key economic performance indicators such as domestic trade, exports, employment, levels of investment, cash flow, prices and business confidence. The breakfast is also a chance to give your opinion on the key external issues which affect you and your views on our future relationship with Europe.

A key part of the meeting is an interactive voting system which allows attendees to vote in confidence on the key questions of the day – these are recorded and Black Country Chamber can monitor and feedback changes and trends live on the day.

The British Chambers of Commerce Quarterly Economic survey anticipated the onset of the two recessions since the early 1990s before they began and continues to act as a reliable indicator of national and regional economic performance. The data revealed by it is timely, accurate and invaluable for anyone wishing to understand the subtle shifts in the economic climate for businesses in the Black Country, West Midlands and beyond.

The survey itself comprises 23 tick box questions covering demand, employment, confidence, investment and external factors and takes just two minutes to complete. No detailed information is required and the survey is completely anonymous. Completion of this is encouraged to increase the profile of the Black Country nationally.

The Chamber's regular brunch networking with a useful topic this month. The MOD focal point for the provision of advice and guidance to companies interested in selling to the MOD is the Defence Suppliers’ Service (DSS)

    BCC events listing

Philip Margerison, DSS Manager will explain how to become a defence supplier, some of the procedures and processes that MOD uses to buy a wide variety of products and services and how to access MOD tender and contract opportunities on-line and free of charge in the MOD Defence Contracts Online (MOD DCO) portal.

The MOD is British industry’s largest single customer. In FY 2014/15 it spent approximately £19.6Bn with third parties on a wide range of products and services. This amounted to between 40 – 45% of total Government spend with third parties. If a company can provide a product or service there is a reasonable likelihood that MOD may have a requirement for it, either directly or indirectly, at some stage.

The DSS advises companies of all sizes, both from the UK and overseas, but the vast majority of the 1,000 or so enquiries it receives and responds to each year are from SME companies.

One of the greatest opportunities to shape the future of the UK takes place on 23rd June 2016: the EU Referendum.

Many business leaders are expressing concern over the lack of information available. Our poll at the end of 2015 shows that only 3% of manufacturers and 28% of service sector business leaders answered yes to the question “Do you feel you have enough information on the Prime Minister's proposals to assess the potential impacts on your business?”

Our last poll in 2015 showed that 66% of business leaders were in favour of staying in a reformed EU. Nationally the figure is getting closer to 50%.

The Black Country Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure that business leaders can have a conversation with their employees and share how a vote either way will effect business growth and their jobs. We have therefore invited the two groups (Brexit and Bremain) to put their case across. We have also invited the West Midlands Economic Forum to share some facts with us with which we can judge the right decision for our businesses.

Places are limited so make sure that you book your place on this early morning event.
