A presentation will be delivered on behalf of MAS by David Hopkins, Intellectual Property Office.

    20/06/2014

    Location: Sandwell Council House
    Speakers:
    • John Lorimer – BIS (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills)
    • Tim Pritchard - Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council
    • David Emery - Virtechs

    To book a free place - www.builtenvironmenthub.org/events

The event will be a presentation and discussion for the public sector on the use of Building Information Management (BIM). The discussion will be led by John Lorimer, who has worked as a client, consultant, major contractor and subcontractor in the construction industry across the UK, Europe and the Far East. He has been appointed by the Construction Industry Council as the Local Authority BIM Liaison Officer, is Chair of the BIM Academy, a Board member of CITB, Visiting professor at Salford University, and Chair of the Constructing Excellence BIM Task Group.

Some myths that John Lorimer will dispel are ‘BIM is for big projects’, ‘BIM is not applicable to public works’, ‘BIM won’t help us with our works programme’, ‘I thought BIM was not for local authority work’ etc. - all quotes he has heard recently from the public sector in relation to BIM. John is talking to and working with organisations such as local authorities, police and fire authorities, NHS and housing associations in developing their understanding and use of BIM.

John will give an update on progress to date and provide an opportunity to view the tools and techniques available to Officers seeking more information on the benefits to be realised, plus how to adopt BIM and make it part of their Procurement, Project and Asset Management strategies.

John will be joined by David Emery of Virtechs, the Chairman of Built Environment Hub’s Technology Forum which includes LEAN construction and BIM as key topics. David has been a 5D BIM practitioner and was using it at Canary Wharf when 2D CAD was latest technology and BIM was not in the industry’s vocabulary. David will review considerations when choosing manufacturer’s data for BIM modelling and the application of COBie standards for asset management.

BIM can provide well-coordinated and economical solutions to organisations when building new facilities, refurbishing and alterations to existing and understanding their long term maintenance strategies.

Our discussion session will be led by John Lorimer and our host, Tim Pritchard of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, who is the Chairman of Built Environment Hub’s Public Sector and LEP Forum.
