On Wednesday 7 June The Barber Institute of Fine Arts  will be hosting a celebration to commemorate a long tradition of making in the Midlands and beyond from the start of the Industrial Revolution to the contemporary moment. Focus on businesses that make useful, beautiful objects from raw materials – explore the importance of making in key locations – celebrate the people, processes and skills involved in making things with care and pride. This event will be taking place at University of Birmingham.

You will hear from experienced business people who have built sustainable businesses based on making in the UK and learn how they have overcome obstacles to getting things made locally, creating opportunities for skilled employment. Discuss the importance of brand and new technologies in enabling craft businesses to thrive and grow without compromising on quality and authenticity and network with others in related sectors and industries.

Emma Bridgewater: Founder, Designer and Owner of Emma Bridgewater Pottery, located in Stoke-on-Trent

Chris Roberts: Co-founder of the With Love Project dedicated to finding people who produce things with a passion and a purpose

Kelly Sidgwick: Co-founder of Good Chemistry Brewing based in Bristol, self-taught makers of approachable beers that celebrate flavour

Simon Topman: CEO of Acme Whistles, Birmingham, makers of the finest whistles in the world.
