This week #madeinsandwell Monday celebrates Steel & Alloy Processing Ltd, the UK’s leading supplier of processed flat carbon steel products.

Founded in 1968, Steel & Alloy processes over 380,000 tonnes of steel every year and has more than 220 employees. The company has achieved year-on-year growth for the last five years and has a sales forecast of over £190m. It featured at number 45 in our list of Sandwell’s Top 50 fastest growing companies for 2017.

As well as its head office in West Bromwich, Steel & Alloy occupies four other premises in Smethwick, Cannock, Darlaston and Newton Aycliffe in County Durham. The company’s business strategy is based on a partnership approach and a number of its customer and supplier relationships have lasted over 40 years.

It also has a strong track record of innovation, and was the first company to introduce multi-strand blanking, coil fed blanking presses, laser welded blanks facilities, a customer integrated distribution centre and an ultra-high strength slitting line into the UK automotive sector.

One of the company’s strengths is its wide range of equipment, enabling it to provide a flexible and bespoke service. Its independence from steel mills is another factor that enables Steel & Alloy to source from across Europe, providing flexibility and stability of supply.

The company attributes its ongoing success to exceeding customer expectations, investing in infrastructure and ensuring it has a well-trained workforce by continually developing its employees.

2018 looks set to be a big year for Steel & Alloy. Not only will it be celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary, but it is also building a brand new £27m factory in Oldbury, which will bring up to 150 new jobs to the business, and the borough.

Managing director Mark Cooper said: “With excellent transport links, Sandwell is centred at the heart of UK automotive supply chain, making it an obvious choice for our new factory. Working closely with Sandwell’s business investment officer, we identified and acquired the perfect site for the future expansion requirements of the company. We were very pleased … to be able to develop our new factory in the region”.
