Plans approved for new Oldbury retail park
Sandwell Council has approved plans submitted by Hortons’ Estate for a new 65,000 sq ft retail park development in Oldbury that will include a new B&M store and a Tim Hortons drive-thru restaurant.
The Birchley Island retail park development on Wolverhampton Road will see the sub-division and external refurbishment of the former Oldbury Toys ‘R’ Us site to create two new units.
The Toys ‘R’ Us site has stood empty for more than two years following the collapse of the national toy chain.
Hortons has agreed lease terms with B&M for one of the units on the site, which will be transformed into a new 20,000 sq ft store and include the development of an accompanying external garden centre of 5,000 sq ft.
A second unit, which is currently under offer, will comprise a retail facility of 20,750 sq ft and will include a new mezzanine floor. Hortons also plan to construct an extension to the existing building to create a further 16,000 sq ft unit, which is already earmarked for leisure use.
Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons has committed to a lease on a new 2,800 sq ft standalone drive-thru restaurant that will be developed on the retail park.
Work is due to start on site in spring this year and the redevelopment will potentially create jobs for local people and attract investment into the town.
