EE has switched on 5G in the Black Country. It was the first company to launch 5G in the UK in May 2019, when it was switched on in six cities – Birmingham, London, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Since the launch last year, EE has been gradually building its network across the country and now customers in Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich and Dudley have received the latest mobile network technology.

EE is initially launching 5G in the busiest parts of the UK, where it believes it can really make a difference by providing a more reliable mobile data connection for both businesses and consumers.

The high-speed connectivity of 5G will provide faster download speeds and should aid innovation across the region, boosting opportunities for businesses and local residents alike.

5G is built on top of EE’s award-winning 4G network and customers will connect to both 4G and 5G at the same time to get the best possible experience.

EE predicts that 5G customers will experience an increase in speeds of around 100-150Mbps even in the busiest areas. The fastest speed possible when EE launched 4G in 2012 was just 50Mbps.

While phase 1 of EE’s 5G rollout focuses on using the combined power of 4G and 5G to give customers the fastest, most reliable mobile broadband experience they’ve ever had, from 2022 phase 2 will introduce the full next generation 5G core network. This will involve higher bandwidth and lower latency, coupled with expansive and growing 5G coverage, enabling an even more responsive network.

Customers on EE, which is owned by BT, are among the first in the country to experience 5G speeds but fellow operators Vodafone, O2 and Three have now also begun their own introductions of 5G coverage.
