Centenary year brings rising profits

AF Blakemore & Son, which is celebrating 100 years of operation this year, reported a 2.4 per cent rise in turnover in the 2015/16 financial year. Pre-tax profits and net assets at the family firm were also up to £7.6m and £80.8m, respectively.

The company, which is headquartered in Willenhall and has a depot in Great Bridge, was founded in Wolverhampton in 1917 by Arthur and Harriet Blakemore, and has grown to become one of the UK’s largest family businesses. It owns 300 Spar shops nationwide, serves over 1000 and also has divisions in logistics, shop fitting and distribution.

Chairman Peter Blakemore, grandson of the founders, attributed its success to cost control and a focus on sustainable growth as part of its ‘2020 vision’, which aims to solidify the company’s position as a market-leading retailer, wholesaler and distributor of food and drink.

Think Sandwell congratulates Blakemore on their continued growth and wishes them all the best for their centenary celebrations. Visit our Business Services pages to find out how we can help you grow your business.
