Haden Hill Leisure Centre in Cradley Heath will undergo redevelopment after Sandwell Council secured £20m from the Levelling Up Fund.

The project aims to replace the current leisure centre with a modern, energy-efficient swimming and leisure facility. This will improve the look of the area, provide more sports facilities and reduce maintenance costs.

Now that the funding is confirmed, the process of drawing up detailed designs will begin. The new building will include a large six-lane pool, a smaller learner pool, wet and dry changing and storage areas, a four-court sports hall, a gym, an indoor cycling studio, two dance studios and a cafe. Sandwell Council will engage with the local community and stakeholders to develop the proposals.

Over the last decade, Sandwell Council has invested over £135m in redeveloping leisure facilities in Tipton, Oldbury, West Bromwich and Wednesbury, as well as the flagship Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick, which will open to the public this summer.

An asset for the local community

Kerrie Carmichael, leader of Sandwell Council, said that the Haden Hill development will be an asset for the local community and support the council’s ambitions to boost physical health and mental wellbeing.

She said: “It will have a greater capacity and inspire more people to play sport and exercise regularly. Replacing the current leisure centre will improve access for disabled people and increase privacy in swimming areas.”
