The GMS group of companies, based on Oakham Road in Oldbury, is partnering with Sandwell College to tackle the shortage of women working in the security industry.

According to the Security Industry Authority, women account for just ten per cent of the UK’s 390,000 registered SIA licence holders. To combat misconceptions about the industry, GMS is working with Sandwell College to raise awareness of the wide opportunities available, and to offer training for women to secure a licence. 

The group includes GMS Security, GMS Technology, GMS Residential, GMS Property and GMS Recovery, and provides security services for businesses and individuals across the UK. It is particularly looking to engage with women whose work in other sectors was hit by Covid-19, such as hospitality and travel, and who will bring transferable skills. Subject to availability, the training can be delivered during school hours to avoid childcare issues. 

Marie Mathews, head of Adult Skills, Traineeships and Kickstart at Sandwell College said: “The Women In Security training opens new opportunities for employment and skills at a time when many women are looking at the career options ahead of them. We are recommending people look at security careers because, if they enjoy it, the industry is calling out for licenced security officers and they will be in high demand.” 

There are many roles in security, such as gatehouse and CCTV monitoring, that don’t require physical strength, and that can offer regular work and scope for career development.
