An investment of £200,000 in new technology has helped casting firm Alucast recover from the lockdown dip.

The award-winning aluminium casting foundry, based on Western Way in Wednesbury, specialises in supplying fully machined components produced using sand, gravity, low pressure and high pressure casting. Alucast, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, is also a member of the Manufacturing Assembly Network and supplied parts to the torch for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The business, which employs over 100 people, experienced a downturn in sales during the pandemic but has recently seen demand grow thanks to investment in new testing capabilities. The £200,000 investment has enabled Alucast to develop a specialist, non-destructive testing system that assesses components for cracks and helps speed up production times. This has resulted in a number of new contracts with leading car firms.

The addition of testing to its offer is part of Alucast’s strategy to move to a ‘single source’ model, offering customers a range of services in addition to casting, including machining, testing and development.
