The vehicle retailer, Motorpoint, has purchased the former Car Select site in Churchbridge, Oldbury. The car supermarket was previously operated by Lex Autolease, a division of Lloyds Bank, but the bank announced in April that it was closing the site despite it being profitable.

The closure of the Oldbury site and its sister site in Coventry would have resulted in 100 job losses for the region but the Oldbury site is now set to re-open in July, saving 40 jobs.

The site covers approximately five acres and is located just off junction 2 of the M5. It will stock 500 low mileage nearly new vehicles from 30 different manufacturers and will have access to Motorpoint’s 5,500 car stock located at other sites, including one at Aston Cross in Birmingham.

The acquisition of the Oldbury facility brings the group’s total number of sites to 11. A statement issued by Motorpoint said the Oldbury location “complements” its Aston Cross site.

Chief executive of Motorpoint, Mark Carpenter, said: “We are delighted to have completed this acquisition as the Motorpoint brand has proved extremely popular across the West Midlands since we launched our Birmingham site three years ago.”

While not disclosed initially as part of the sale announcement, Lex Autolease has now confirmed that the deal includes a provision for the transfer of 40 former Car Select staff to Motorpoint.
