Traffic delays are likely as work begins on the Sandwell sections of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension to the Midlands Metro.

The works, which started on 22 June, will bring lane restrictions to Sedgley Road East in Tipton, between Mayfair Gardens and Sacred Heart School, for up to four weeks. Bus services and traffic flow in the surrounding area will be affected.

The road restrictions are in place to enable the construction of a new access road. The same part of Sedgley Road will be closed completely later in the summer, for up to four weeks, while a railway bridge is removed, to be replaced even later in the project.

Anyone travelling is advised to plan for delays and to check the West Midlands Network website for the latest information before they travel.

Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “The Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro extension is a brilliant scheme for the Black Country, and I am determined we press ahead to help provide some economic certainty in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s great that those living in Sandwell can see this project getting underway. We, of course, apologise for any inconvenience that the work is going to cause, but this scheme is a critical part of our wider transport plans for the region and will make a real difference to residents.”
