Midlands Construction Summit and Expo come to Coventry
Join the conversation on key topical issues in the construction industry by attending the combined conference and exhibition taking place at the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday 20th September 2016.
The Midlands Construction Summit will bring together a range of supply chain specialists and industry leaders to discuss concerns around three interlinking themes – image, skills and productivity.
Despite high tech advances, many young people still think working in the construction industry is all about getting their boots muddy. This leads to difficulties recruiting skilled workers which, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, has created the greatest skills crisis in the industry since 1998. This, coupled with a general lack of training, leads to a reduction in overall productivity.
One solution proposed by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is to establish a long-term training programme, which would attract young people and showcase the variety of roles available within the construction sector.
Another possible approach is to tackle gender inequality by developing a strategy specifically to attract more women into the industry. With women making up just 11% of the workforce, it’s not surprising that many have reported feeling isolated.
These ideas, and many others, will be explored, alongside the new Midlands Engine strategy recently set out by the government and designed to achieve greater regional economic growth and productivity.
