Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council has appointed the Midlands office of national construction firm Willmott Dixon to build an £8m pool and leisure centre in Tipton. Tipton’s new swimming and leisure complex, which will feature a six-lane 25m pool, will be built at the junction of Alexandra Road and Thursfield Road. It is to replace the Tipton Swimming Centre on Queens Road.

Due to start this month, construction is expected to be finished in February 2013.

The complex will also include a learner pool, gym, changing facilities, dance studio and community areas, as well as a landscaped urban piazza.

The Willmott Dixon Group is the UK’s second largest privately owned capital works, regeneration and support services company. In Tipton, the firm recently completed the award-winning RSA Academy on Bilston Road.

Sandwell Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for strategic resources Steve Eling said:
“This construction is a really exciting project. It has reached a landmark stage with the letting of the contract to Willmott Dixon and once completed it will be welcomed by everyone in Tipton.”
