Oldbury building transformation plans approved

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council logo.Sandwell Council’s Planning Committee has given the go-ahead to plans to redevelop the site of the former Toys R Us store on Wolverhampton Road in Oldbury.

The building has been closed since April 2018 after Toys R Us went into administration, with the loss of 3000 jobs across the chain. The approved plans for the Oldbury site will see the location regenerated to include an additional retail unit, drive-through restaurant and potential gym.

Construction work will involve demolishing the existing entrance, dividing the existing retail unit into two units, and constructing a third unit for leisure use and a standalone drive-through unit. A council document published in advance of the planning meeting said that the proposals meet development plan objectives, “such as those for renewable energy, job creation, reuse of previously developed land, bringing vacant land back into beneficial use, securing investment in the borough and adding to the range of facilities in the local area.”

Birmingham-based New Street LLP put forward the proposals. Think Sandwell wishes them all the best for the development and will be following closely for updates. To find out how we can help your business with finance and property, visit our Business Services pages.
