New accounts recently filed show that turnover for East End Foods PLC rose by nearly two million in the year to 30 April 2016, reaching £178.3m. Pre-tax profit was also up from £4.5m to £4.9m.

The company, based in East End House in West Bromwich, is one of the region’s great success stories. First established in Wolverhampton in 1972 by the five Wouhra brothers from New Delhi in India, its operations have since expanded to include sites in Birmingham and West Bromwich, making it one of the largest Asian food companies in the UK and the largest importer of ethnic foods.

However, it remains very much a family firm, employing 340 staff and even earning a visit from then-Prime Minister David Cameron in 2010. Its product range includes over 1250 lines of rice, spices, pulses, flour, oils, canned foods and sauces which it supplies to retailers, restaurants and its own cash and carry store in Aston. Future plans include the building of an urban food farming technology centre, to educate the public about food production.
