Wolverhampton business breakfast club

On Wednesday 1 November the chamber will be hosting a businesss breakfast event at The Mount Hotel & Conference Centre, Wolverhampton.
Katie Buckingham, Director of Altruist Enterprises, will deliver a short prsentation on how to prevent and identify the early signs of stress in the workplace and help you support colleagues more effectively.

In addition, Black Country Chamber of Commerce would also like to update delegates on the current AIM for the Black Country programme. AIM for the Black Country is a service being offered to SMEs to enhance growth and competitiveness. Through a partnership arrangement between the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, Black Country Growth Hub, Local Authorities, Black Country Consortium and the University of Wolverhampton, SMEs can access a coordinated approach to a range of business support, advice and workshops.

On Thursday 2 November Innnovate UK will be hosting a workshop at Energy Systems Catapult in Birmingham.
The objective of the workshop will be:
- To set out the rationale for introducing innovation loans
- To explain where innovation loans fit in the funding landscape, particularly in relation to grant funding, equity investment and commercial debt
- To highlight the key features of the innovation loans and how these will support innovative SMEs in their growth journey
- To explain the obligations associated with loans, particularly highlighting how they differ from grant funding
- To walk through the ‘customer journey’ that SMEs can expect to experience as innovation loans are delivered through a series of competitions with defined scopes
- To enable businesses to form a judgement (based on whether innovation loans are likely to meet their growth needs and whether they are likely to fit Innovate UK’s selection criteria) about applying for future innovation loan competitions.
Who should attend?
- Senior decision-makers (CEO / CFO / CTO) in innovative SMEs (businesses with fewer than 250 employees / turnover of less than c£50m / balance sheet total of less than c£43m)
- Key intermediaries in professional services firms and the public sector support landscape.

On Tuesday 7th November, the chamber are hosting a practical workshop for key people in exporting involved in handling letters of credit, ie; export sales, project teams, export managers, administrators, finance teams, shipping and customer services.
Are you receiving letters of credit from customers in new or challenging markets? Do you find the letter of credit process cumbersome, time consuming and expensive? The training will ultimately help exporting companies to reduce bank charges, save time and increase profit margins. Delegates will receive training delivered in a highly interactive, practical and engaging format delivered by an experienced practitioner in letters of credit and the workshop will include a range of recent examples of letters of credit with a focus on how to avoid the common pitfalls.

On Wednesday 8 November the Wolverhampton Business Solutions Centre will be hosting business innovation workshops on three specific topics by leading academics from Aston University and Birmingham City University.
The workshops are funded by the European Regional Development Fund and therefore free to the participating company. On completion of the sessions, delegates will receive a prestigious “Managing Innovation in Business” certificate.
They will help you understand how to envision the future as part of different scenarios for regional, national and international contexts. Participants will explore the uncertainties in their environment and use these uncertainties to develop plausible images of the future. Tools will be provided to anticipate the impact of the alternative future scenarios. Participants will learn how to understand present and prepare more effectively for future strategies.

Innovation vouchers: one to one clinics in Sandwell

20/11/2017On Monday 20 November the Sandwell Business Solutions Centre will be hosting an event to provide information about innovation vouchers, offering one-to-one clinics.
Innovation vouchers
Innovation vouchers are available to eligible local businesses in the West Midlands through a consortium that comprises Aston University, Birmingham City University and the University of Wolverhampton.
How innovation vouchers work
Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), they allow SMEs in Greater Birmingham and Solihull, the Black Country and the Marches regions to:
- Apply for financial support to access external expertise to support an innovation project
- Access free support in the form of workshops to become more competitive and manage growth effectively.
This scheme targets SMART specialisation sectors and aims to develop new processes and systems to improve efficiency of SMEs and to bring new products and services to market.
The project will deliver 190 vouchers in the years 2016-2019. Each SME needs to match £1 received as an innovation voucher with £1 of its own company funds.

23/11/2017On Thursday 23 November the University of Birmingham will be hosting a presentation from the Birmingham Business School Advisory Board Guest Lecture Jane Cordell.
Jane Cordell is one of the UK’s leading professional experts on deafness and disability issues in the workplace. She lost her hearing as a young adult but despite this setback rose to a senior position in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where she received 4 national awards for her work with the Polish government on disability rights legislative reform.
A state school graduate of Cambridge and the Open University, Jane is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has worked as a professional musician, teacher, editor, British diplomat, Chair and trustee of several charities and social entrepreneur.
