Over four years, a funding programme has helped 92 businesses in Sandwell with face-to-face support and, in many cases, grant funding.

Over recent years, the heritage sector has been hit by cut-backs in public sector funding, with reductions in visitor spend and increasing competition for visitors. At the same time, a multitude of new opportunities continue to emerge relating to technological innovation; namely new audiences, communication networks and new management approaches.
In the context of this developing landscape for the heritage sector, this workshop explores the increasing need for museums and heritage organisations to become ever more entrepreneurial in their approach. By doing this, it will enable them to increase resilience to the changing environment and better identify ways and means to build profile, audiences, income and opportunities to communicate the heritage at their heart.

At their July Brexit event one of the names that members wanted to hear from was Mark Garnier MP. Mark Garnier was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for International Trade on 17 July 2016.
Commenting on his appointment Mark said he was “thrilled” by the responsibilities. “This is all about seeking opportunities for the UK in the wider world as well as securing the best relationship with the EU after Brexit.” As a neighbouring MP to the Black Country Mark is also conscious of the importance of the Midlands as an Engine for the UK economy. “Indeed, the policy and strategy we have created centres on the Midlands Engine – the ability of the local economy to drive its own fortunes and the move towards more local democracy”.

The University of Wolverhampton Business Solutions Centre is delighted to announce that through a partnering arrangement with the CAA approved Rheinmetall Unmanned Systems Training Academy (RUSTA) it is offering a course leading to Permission for Commercial Operations (PFCO) thus providing commercial drone pilots with the skills and qualification to operate safely and legally in UK airspace.
What is RUSTA’s remote pilot certificate SUAS (RPCS)?
RUSTA’s Remote Pilot Certificate SUAS (RPCS) course is CAA approved and offers training and assessment to SUAS, UAV or drone operators that wish to obtain a PFCO from the CAA. The RPCS course is designed to teach you the skills required to confidently fly within the safety standards and legal requirements set out by the CAA.
This course has been built from the ground up to give you all the tools you need for a successful future in the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) technology, and will be delivered by one of RUSTA's trained academy staff, who have prior backgrounds and experience in this field whether military or commercial. The qualification that you receive at the completion of the course is a legal requirement in order to operate and offer these services commercially, so where better to obtain it then one of the leading CAA accreditors in the UK. You will receive breakfast, lunch, tea and coffee throughout the days of the course.

On 13 February BMet will be hosting an event designed specifically for the SME market to explore how the latest government policy and Apprenticeship levy will affect your business. The session will also include briefings from leading legal and financial advisors to help firms understand any changes within employment law or financial benefits for firms engaging in an apprenticeship programme.
The Apprenticeship levy will be introduced in early 2017 in order to help fund plans for 3 million apprentices in UK businesses by 2020. It will apply to all large companies with a payroll of £3 million and above, to a value of 0.5% of the total company payroll. The levy will be a mandatory payment – if a company doesn’t use the money for their own training purposes then it will be used to support funding for apprenticeships in the SME business community.

On 16 February,Future Alliance will be hosting a Go-karting endurance race and invite you to attend.
Upon attending you will be divided into teams of 3 and each person in the team will have the chance to have 5 laps as a qualifier, following a safety briefing. The results of the qualifying laps will determine pole position for the endurance race. Each team will then race for approximately 50 minutes with the winning team being the team with the most laps completed. There will be a prize for the winning team, following the race.

Black Country Chamber of Commerce is calling for a comprehensive regional economic development strategy and have identified key areas that need to be addressed. This includes a greater share of capital investment in the Midlands, a focus on the future of intelligent manufacturing, investment in infrastructure development and support to develop skills.

Making your website work for you - The inside view from the Express and Star digital team with Newsroom tour.
On Tuesday 28 February, the digital team from the Express and Star would like to meet local businesses to explore how they can help with how websites are being used. This workshop will look at the way the Express and Star approaches its website and will share their experiences to help chamber members to use their websites effectively. Discuss what questions you should ask when developing your website and how to actively attract visitors and increase your digital reach.
Outline Schedule
9:30am – 10:00am Registration and tea or coffee with networking
10:00am Welcome by Print Managing Director Graeme Clifford with overview of the Express & Star media
10:15am – MNA Digial Workshop with Digital Managing Director Andy Hill
11:15am – Group splits into two for tours of the Newsroom and the Digital Media specialisation.

12noon – Meet back in the board room for a light lunch – networking and a chance to ask questions of the Express & Star teams.
